This group of lessons was taught to a 6th grade General Music class which meets everyday for 41 minutes. In the 6th grade setting, all students are required to take this course as part of their Unified Arts rotation for 30 days. Due to Covid-19, we see a majority of the students both in-person and virtually every other day. Although, there are a few students who are in school everyday as well as a few who are virtual everyday. By the end of their middle school general music classes, grades 6-8, the students gain the skills in order to start their own rock band. In the 6th Grade General Music classes specifically the students learn the basis of rhythm, and how to play the drum set, the piano, and the guitar.
Introduction to the Lessons
The lessons where taught to a new rotation of 6th grade General Music students from Wednesday, December 2nd through Friday, December 4th. The group of students this lesson was taught to begin their rotation of General Music on Wednesday, December 2nd. Although these lessons occurred was within the first few days of these students having General Music, these lessons acted as an introduction to drumming unit which they will be continuing with during their General Music classes.
With the idea that all students are required to take this course, I had to keep in mind that not all of the students have any familiarity with music outside of their previous General Music classes in Elementary School. Due to this, I had to make sure this lesson was something that was obtainable to all students no matter their musical background. In addition to the importance of the students musical abilities, I had to take into consideration the way in which they were learning. Due to Covid-19, I had to make my lessons based around the ability for these students to participate no matter what learning environment they were in. While teaching the lessons, I had students in person everyday, in person every other day, or fully virtual. While I was teaching this lessons, my school district went completely virtual for the last day of the lessons, December 4th. With always having students being virtual for this lessons in one way shape or form, that factor didn't hinder any of their learning experience.
Throughout each of the lessons, the students began by learning about what body percussion is, as well as getting the opportunity to try it out as a class. During the second lessons, the students were shown 2 videos of different body percussion routines. Following the videos, there was a class discussion as to other aspects of body percussion, and what makes it visually appealing to the audience. The students also had the ability to begin creating a body percussion routine as a class and perform it together. The students then began writing their own body percussion routine. During the third lessons, the students learned about the pitch of body percussion. They were given time to complete writing their routine, as well as to practice and record them performing their routine. The students also were given 3 reflection questions revolving the creation and performance of their body percussion routine.
Throughout these lessons, the main goals for the students are:
To learn what body percussion is as a whole
To create their own unique body percussion rhythm
To perform their own body percussion rhythm accurately
To feel engaged, empowered, and connected to music through the creation of their own unique body percussion routine
